Abstract

The Egyptian heritage of Coptic art and culture has a deep and multifaceted impact on the development of contemporary ceramic sculpture in Egypt. This paper examines how the researcher drew inspiration from the distinctive visual language, symbolism, and spiritual traditions of Coptic Christianity to create a collection of innovative ceramic sculptures that honor their cultural legacy and push the boundaries of the medium, which is clay. At the core of this is the expression of Coptic artistic sensibilities with a contemporary vision, where a rich symbolic vocabulary emerges, connected to the narratives and beliefs in the Coptic Christian doctrine.

This research presents a description and theorization of twelve ceramic sculptures ranging from figurative to abstract compositions, executed in the medium of fired clay (terracotta) with various surface treatment techniques. These works were exhibited at the Mahmoud Said Museum in Alexandria titled "Coptic Icons".

The importance of this research lies in how to benefit from the symbolic forms of ancient Coptic art and icons, and use them in the formation and composition of a collection of ceramic sculptural works with design, compositional, and aesthetic values. This is in addition to rooting the Egyptian identity and shedding light on an important artistic era in the artistic heritage. With the same importance, the works were not merely a reproduction of the visual models of Coptic art, but rather a dynamic process of interpretation and innovative re-creation.

Ultimately, the impact of the Coptic heritage on contemporary Egyptian ceramic sculpture is multifaceted and profound.
