Abstract

The Patriotic War of 1812 in Russia is one of the most significant historical events of the 19th century, witnessed by renowned Russian sculptor Fyodor Tolstoy. This research aims to highlight Tolstoy’s artistic journey by exploring his upbringing, education, and achievements, alongside the impact of the Patriotic War on his works, particularly in medal art. It examines the subjects he addressed, his methods, materials, and the aesthetic values his works conveyed.



The research follows a historical, descriptive, and analytical approach, dividing the content into five key sections. The first covers a brief overview of Tolstoy’s life and artistic accomplishments. The second introduces the art of medals in the early 19th century, highlighting key artists and Tolstoy’s work before the war. The third provides a concise history of the Russian Patriotic War against the French campaign, emphasizing major events and their influence on Tolstoy’s art.



By analyzing Tolstoy's most notable works related to the war, the research reveals the significant impact the conflict had on his career. His medal designs became a turning point in Russian medal art, reflecting the hopes, aspirations, and glory of the Russian people during times of great crisis, further cementing Tolstoy’s reputation as one of the foremost creators of medal art in the 19th century.
