Theological Symbolism and Its role in Contemporary Furniture Design

Each civilization is characterized by its own character, which is controlled by many different factors, including environmental factors, climate, geographical location, social belief, cultural heritage of customs and traditions that contribute to the formation of the characteristics of the heritage of each civilization and distinguish it from the other, and this is manifested in the different artistic legacies in architecture, interior design, furniture and artistic decorations unique and distinctive to each civilization. The research tried to confirm the relationship between the impact of ideological symbolism on the products of different civilizations and the attempt to design contemporary furniture with ideological symbolism in light of what we live under the influence of contemporary intellectual and materialistic trends and tendencies becomes an experimental approach for visual pleasure, comfort of use and identity affirmation. The research issue is that contemporary furniture design lacks aesthetic foundations and standards, especially when it comes to the use of styles and how to utilize their symbols in furniture units that have a philosophical meaning related to the value of ideological symbolism. The importance of the research is due to exploring the origins of symbolism in belief in the ancient Egyptian and Islamic civilizations and shedding light on it to enrich the aesthetics of furniture design. The research aims to monitor the factors influencing contemporary design and the development of furniture design elements. The research concludes by analyzing examples of contemporary designs of some distinctive furniture pieces with faith to emphasizing the importance of identity in design.
