Abstract

Employing art in the service of society by publishing mural painting on public bridge columns has a direct impact on improving the aesthetic vision and addressing the visual distortion caused by the solid cement blocks of its columns as they penetrate cities to overcome traffic problems. The research aims to study global experiences in mural painting on public bridge pillars, given the massive expansion in their construction in recent decades to overcome traffic congestion crises, which creates an urgent need to address the defects they may sometimes cause in the field of visual vision by employing mural painting on them. The mural techniques on public bridge columns vary according to the features of the residential and urban space, which represent an important mediator in the transformation of public roads and streets into open outdoor art exhibition halls. Communities also vary in dealing with the topics of mural painting on the pillars of their public bridges according to their cultural and intellectual heritage, as is the case in Asian societies, or their tendency toward contemporaneity and modernity, as is the case in America and Canada. Mural painting on the columns and walls of public bridges is also considered part of defining the identity of countries and their cultural heritage, and helps in introducing society’s values and culture. Another goal of publishing murals on public bridge columns is tourism revitalization and economic development, as enhancing the visual vision of the urban landscape contributes to attracting tourists, which benefits the local economy.
