Abstract

Film is one of the most powerful and influential visual arts, a world filled with creative innovation. It can transform written words into vivid images, conveying various meanings and connotations in a narrative line that contributes to the development of events. Cinematic storytelling is the structure where the unity of theme or plot and the set of signals translate the text into a series of scenes through visual, auditory, and motion connections. High degrees of innovation and complexity can arise between them.

The mise-en-scène represents visual communication with all its elements, including costumes. They play a crucial role as a fundamental element of visual embodiment in cinematic storytelling and in shaping the image in the film. They go beyond mere aesthetics, contributing to delineating characters in all their dimensions, and developments, enhancing their depth, and enriching their visual identity. Therefore, costumes are an integral part of the film experience, immersing the viewer in the story ambiance and creating a deeper connection with the characters on screen.

The research examines the ability of costumes to generate meanings through various semiotic systems and their flexibility as a tool for expression to enrich the visual and intellectual image. It emphasizes the importance of balancing the achievement of the purpose of costume function to convey a message with the aesthetic aspect, without one overshadowing the other through the analytical study of some costumes in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.
