The role of mural painting in the evolve of the concept of the open cities museum globally

Abstract

In recent decades, mural painting has become an important function in promoting the services that cities employ in order to attract visitors from different parts of the world to visit them, leading to the emergence of a term known as cities mural museums which have been characterized as a basic pillar in the cities’ quest which leads to economic and tourism prosperity, To reach it, this is done by installing murals on the exterior facades of some cities buildings that discuss topics related to the city’s history and its most important landmarks and cultures and also by manifesting it’s social messages such as racial problems, class disparity. it is also necessary to pay attention that cities mural museums which form what is currently known as the open air museums are concerned with issues related to its local residents, in order to connect them to their micro-society and identity, cities mural museums are created by different methods from organized annual murals festivals or mural art programs that cities manage and fund to promote their own open air mural musuem, others represent it’s political conflicts and historical issues such as Belfast and derry in ireland. another type of cities mural musuems can be found in old neglected historical industrial cities that are transformed into an open air mural museum displaying it’s architectural and construction history to attract tourists, such as Tony Garnier residential industrial city in France. This research is reviewing the most important models of those open air cities mural museums.
